Naveen Patnaik, born on October 16, 1946, in Cuttack, Odisha, is a prominent Indian politician and writer. He is the son of Biju Patnaik, a revered leader in the Indian independence movement and a former Chief Minister of Odisha, and Gyan Patnaik. Naveen’s early education was at Welham Boys’ School in Dehradun, followed by The Doon School. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Delhi University in 1967.

Before entering politics, Naveen Patnaik led a life immersed in cultural pursuits. He authored several acclaimed non-fiction books, including “A Second Paradise: Indian Courtly Life, 1590-1947,” “A Desert Kingdom: The People of Bikaner,” and “The Garden of Life: An Introduction to the Healing Plants of India.” He also ran a boutique named ‘Psyched elhi’ in Delhi’s Oberoi Hotel and was well-connected with influential circles.

Naveen’s political journey began in 1997, following the demise of his father. He founded the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) the same year, honoring his father’s legacy. Demonstrating a commitment to clean governance and pro-poor policies, he quickly garnered support. In 2000, he was elected as the Chief Minister of Odisha, a position he held until June 2024, making him one of India’s longest-serving chief ministers.

During his tenure, Naveen Patnaik was recognized for his effective disaster management strategies. The United Nations lauded his administration’s handling of Cyclone Phailin in 2013, highlighting it as a global model for disaster preparedness. In 2019, the UN also commended his proposal to reserve 33% of seats for women in the national and state legislatures.

Despite criticisms regarding his fluency in Odia, the state’s official language, Naveen maintained a strong connection with the people of Odisha. His leadership style, marked by simplicity and a focus on development, resonated with many. After stepping down as Chief Minister in June 2024, he continued to serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Naveen Patnaik’s journey from a cultural enthusiast to a seasoned politician reflects his adaptability and dedication to public service. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Odisha’s political and social landscape.
