In the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand secured a commanding 60-run victory over hosts and defending champions Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi.

New Zealand’s Innings

After being invited to bat first, New Zealand faced early setbacks, finding themselves at 73/3 by the 17th over. However, opener Will Young and captain Tom Latham orchestrated a remarkable recovery. Young scored 107 off 113 balls, while Latham contributed a swift 118 off 104 deliveries. Their partnership of 118 runs for the fourth wicket laid a solid foundation. Glenn Phillips added late momentum with a brisk 61 off 39 balls, propelling New Zealand to a formidable total of 320/5.

Pakistan’s Response

Chasing 321, Pakistan’s innings faltered early, with opener Saud Shakeel and captain Mohammad Rizwan dismissed cheaply, leaving the team struggling at 22/2 after 10 overs. Babar Azam (64) and Fakhar Zaman attempted to stabilize the innings, but regular wickets hindered momentum. Khushdil Shah’s valiant 69 off 49 balls provided some hope, but New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack eventually bowled out Pakistan for 260, sealing a 60-run victory.

This emphatic win marks a strong start for New Zealand in the tournament, showcasing their batting depth and bowling prowess.
