Vignesh Puthur, born on March 2, 2001, in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram district of Kerala, India, is an emerging talent in Indian cricket. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm) and weighing approximately 65 kg (143 lbs), Vignesh is a right-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler.

Early Life and Education

Vignesh hails from a humble background. His father, Sunil Kumar P, is an auto-rickshaw driver, and his mother, K.P. Bindhu, is a homemaker. He is the youngest among five older brothers. Vignesh completed his schooling at GMHSS Perinthalmanna and pursued higher education at GEMS Arts and Science College, Malappuram. He is currently working towards an MA in Literature at PTM Government College, Perinthalmanna, as of November 2024.

Cricketing Journey

Vignesh’s passion for cricket ignited at a young age, playing with neighborhood children. Initially experimenting with medium pace and spin, he was advised by local cricketer Mohammed Sherif to focus on leg spin. At 14, he joined the Malappuram District Cricket Academy, where coach Vijayan mentored him in left-arm wrist spin. His dedication led him to represent Kerala in various age-group teams, including Under-14, Under-19, and Under-23.

Domestic Career

In 2024, Vignesh played for the Alleppey Ripples in the inaugural Kerala Premier League (KPL), taking two wickets in three matches. His performance caught the attention of Mumbai Indians (MI) scouts, leading to trials where he impressed head coach Mahela Jayawardene. In the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, MI acquired Vignesh for his base price of ₹30 lakh.

Playing Style

Vignesh is known for his deceptive left-arm wrist spin, utilizing variations in pace and flight to challenge batsmen. He draws inspiration from Indian cricketer Kuldeep Yadav but has developed a unique bowling action.

Personal Interests

Beyond cricket, Vignesh enjoys swimming, traveling, and gymming. He is also an animal lover, particularly fond of dogs and cats.

Vignesh Puthur’s journey from a small town in Kerala to the IPL is a testament to his talent, hard work, and determination. As he continues to develop his skills, he represents a promising future in Indian cricket.

IPL Journey with Mumbai Indians

In November 2024, during the IPL auction, Mumbai Indians secured Vignesh’s services for ₹30 lakh. Despite being an uncapped player without senior-level experience, his unique bowling style and potential made him a valuable addition to the squad.

Impressive IPL Debut

Vignesh made a remarkable debut against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23, 2025. Introduced as an impact player, he delivered an impressive spell, taking three crucial wickets:

  • Dismissed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, caught in the deep.

  • Removed Shivam Dube, who was caught at long-on.

  • Took the wicket of Deepak Hooda.

His figures of 3-32 were a silver lining for MI in an otherwise challenging match.

Acknowledgment from MS Dhoni

A heartwarming moment followed the match when former CSK captain MS Dhoni personally congratulated Vignesh for his performance, offering words of encouragement. This gesture highlighted the sportsmanship and camaraderie prevalent in the IPL.

Future Prospects
